Verizon Developer Community Conference Kicks Off

Verizon Wireless Re-Affirms Commitment to Help Developers Get Apps to Market Quickly and to Continue to Open Its Network

09/21/2010 Source by vsw.com

BASKING RIDGE, NJ, and LAS VEGAS, NV — Today at the Verizon Developer Community (VDC) Conference in Las Vegas, the company re-affirmed its commitment to helping developers deliver applications to market by continuing to open its network to them with APIs and other tools and services. Verizon Wireless also outlined the progress of V CAST Apps, its mobile storefront, and said that it is expanding V CAST Apps to additional platforms, beginning with Android devices.

“We’re committed to providing developers with the best platforms, the best tools and the best opportunities to bring their apps to market quickly and profitably. We will continue to open our network with APIs and offer great merchandising and marketing solutions that help ‘power your app’,” said Greg Haller, vice president of consumer solutions for Verizon Wireless, in his opening address at the event.

“It’s all about delivering a great mobile experience – best-in-class applications on the nation’s most reliable network – for customers,” Haller added.

Since the VDC was established in July 2009, more than 5,000 developers have joined to create applications to be distributed to Verizon Wireless’ customers on the nation’s most reliable wireless network. The V CAST Apps storefront launched earlier this year on the RIM platform, and submissions are now being accepted for Android-based applications in V CAST Apps. V CAST Apps offers developers speedy time-to-market and carrier-billing, so any charges for the applications appear on the customer’s monthly wireless bill.

T-Mobile Hit With Lawsuit for Blocking Marijuana Texts

By SAM GUSTIN Posted 4:20 PM 09/17/10 , ,
T-Mobile
T-Mobile’s relationship with companies that use its mobile service to send texts is rapidly deteriorating. One day after a digital startup vowed to drop T-Mobile over a forthcoming fee hike, another texting company has sued T-Mobile for blocking its service.

The reason? Apparently T-Mobile “did not approve” of a company called EZ Texting, which does business with a website, WeedMaps.com, that provides information on the location of legal medical marijuana dispensaries in California.

On Friday, EZ Texting sued T-Mobile in the U.S. District Court in New York City. EZ Texting says that on Sept. 10th, T-Mobile began “unlawful blocking” of its 313131 text service, which it offers to business and non-profits to help get their message to the public.

“T-Mobile has cut off my code and put my business in jeopardy,” Shane Neman, CEO of EZ Texting told DailyFinance. “There’s nothing illegal about knowing about legal dispensaries in the states they are legal in.”

Founded in 2006, New York-based EZ Texting has 10,000 small business and non-profit customers all over the country that use its SMS platform to send content to users. “None of our customers can send texts through 313131 on T-Mobile,” Nemen says. “None of the other carriers are blocking us.”

A Growing Problem

“EZ Texting is being irreparably damaged in its business because of the blocking by T-Mobile,” Neman said in a declaration to the court. “The ability to exchange text messages with all cell phone users is vital to EZ Texting’s business.”

The case highlights the growing tension between new startups like ChaCha, 4Info and EZ Texting that use text messages to deliver content to users and the mobile carriers on whose networks those texts travel. T-Mobile is a division of German mobile giant Deutsche Telekom (DTEGY).

“EZ Texting has a rigorous screening process to ensure that the businesses and non-profits that use EZ Texting to send text messages are doing so in compliance with all applicable laws and regulations,” Neman said.

The company claims T-Mobile began blocking it after learning that a company that provides information about medical marijuana dispensaries in California was using the service. It says it was informed by OpenMarket — the same aggregator as in the ChaCha situation — that T-Mobile had found the site to be objectionable, hence the blocking.

Aggregators are middlemen that stand between publishers like ChaCha and EZ Texting, as well as Twitter, Facebook and ESPN, and the mobile subscribers they send content to.

T-Mobile issued a statement saying: “T-Mobile doesn’t comment on pending litigation.”

Signs of Things to Come?

Neman said that while the commercial aspect of T-Mobile’s actions are important, there is a broader issue.

“Consumers should have the right to text with whomever they want,” he says. “They have as much of a right to make text messages as they do phone calls. If T-Mobile is blocking legal medical marijuana texts, what’s next, gay marriage, the Tea Party?” Neman says.

Gigi B. Sohn, president and co-founder of Public Knowledge, a DC-based advocacy group, blasted T-Mobile for blocking a legal service.

“This case is yet another example of a totally arbitrary decision by a carrier to block text message calls between consumers and organizations they want to communicate with,” Sohn said in a statement. “The FCC should put a fast end to this blocking by issuing the ruling we asked them for three years ago. EZ Texting and other companies should be able to focus on growing their business rather than filing lawsuits to prevent blocking.”

As new businesses spring up that rely on text messaging to serve content to customers, their relationship with the big mobile carriers will only get more acrimonious. T-Mobile’s battles with ChaCha, 4Info and EZ Texting are signs of things to come.

T-Mobile sued for blocking medical marijuana text messages

 By Suzanne Choney/MSNBC

T-Mobile is being sued for blocking text messages dealing with medical marijuana from a company that sends out group messages for all kinds of businesses, including the marijuana website.

New York-based EZ Texting recently filed suit in U.S. District Court against T-Mobile, alleging on Sept. 10 the carrier started blocking all messages by the company’s clients because T-Mobile “did not approve” of text messages sent by one of those clients, LegalMarijuanaDispensary.com, using EZ Texting’s services.

The marijuana website, also known as WeedMaps.com, describes itself as “a community where medical marijuana patients connect with other patients in their geographic region to freely discuss and review local cannabis co-operatives, dispensaries, medical doctors and delivery services.”

EZ Texting, in the lawsuit, said it is being “irreparably damaged in its business because of the blocking by T-Mobile….The thousands of EZ Texting’s customers — which include both for-profit businesses and non-profit organizations — that rely on EZ Texting’s short code (which is akin to a telephone number for text messages) cannot be reached by T-Mobile’s cell phone users, nor can those businesses and non-profits reach T-Mobile’s cell phone users.”

T-Mobile has said “the claims in the lawsuit are meritless,” according to a report in The Washington Post. The nation’s fourth-largest carrier, trying to position itself as a “family network,” recently introduced a “Kids are Free” promotion, and teamed up with Wal-Mart.

Advocacy group Public Knowledge, which since 2007 has been trying to get the Federal Communications Commission to declare that text messaging is “subject to the same nondiscrimination rules as voice communications,” says the T-Mobile/EZ Texting case is proof of why such nondiscrimination rules are needed.

Gigi B. Sohn, president and co-founder of Public Knowledge, said on the organization’s website that the case is “yet another example of a totally arbitrary decision by a carrier to block text message calls between consumers and organizations they want to communicate with. The FCC should put a fast end to this blocking by issuing the ruling we asked them for three years ago. EZ Texting and other companies should be able to focus on growing their business rather than filing lawsuits to prevent blocking.”

DMA Recap, Site Updates & Platform Enhancements

Wednesday, October 28, 2009

Author www.ivisionmobile.com

Wow, what a month! October was a busy month for the iVision Mobile crew. We attended the CTIA Wireless show in San Diego during the first week of October and then exhibited at the Annual DMA Conference in San Diego 10 days later. The DMA conference is where the nation’s top direct marketers showcase their products. These direct marketers include direct mail providers, list management and fulfillment companies, printing companies, and email marketing providers. This was a great opportunity for us to showcase our iMessenger text messaging software and highlight our private label reseller license. iVision Mobile exhibited in the Mobile Marketing HotSpot, a designated area for the nation’s leading mobile marketing providers. iVision Mobile was one of only 8 featured companies and the conference underscored and reinforced our position as one of the leading mobile marketing platforms in the marketplace. It was very rewarding to see that none of our competitors offered as robust of a software platform as us.
Check out some of the pics from the DMA show:

By now, we hope you’ve had the chance to check out our new site! If not, check it out @ www.ivisionmobile.com and let us know what you think. We would love to get your feedback.

We’ve also been hard at work making some platform enhancements for our clients. While we have already added some new features to the client portal, we still have more in the works and will update everyone as they become available.

The following enhancements have been made:

  • INBOX: The message inbox now features an auto-refresh capability which will display new messages as they are received in real-time. This is a great feature for users who wish to monitor incoming messages for a LIVE campaign.
  • TARGET LIST: We’ve added a couple of new features to the Target List section of the client portal which will provide much needed functionality when creating target lists.
  1. First, a new advanced search tool has been added to provide ultimate flexibility when creating target lists. The advanced search option features multiple filter capabilities and is a highly sophisticated tool for segmenting and filtering contacts.
  2. Second, we’ve added the ability to create DYNAMIC or STATIC target lists. A static list, is one which has a set start and end date and compiles results based on a set date range. A dynamic list, is one where a rule is established in the database. As more contacts fall into that list’s criteria, they will be dynamically added to the target list. An example of a dynamic list is one containing receives messages of “A”. If three months from now an “A” message is received by the system, that mobile number will automatically be added to the dynamic target list.
  • GATEWAY API: Some new APIs have been added to the gateway that provide account status information, additional reporting capabilities, and more. An enhanced version of the CREATE A KEYWORD API has also been added. This new version provides all the built-in functionality of the mobile campaign composer.
  •  TEXT REMINDER SYSTEM (iTRS): We are about 99.9% finished with the new iTRS Text Reminder System. The new iTRS system features:
  1. NEW MENU: A graphical menu has been added that is more appealing than the previous text-based menu
  2. REMINDER TEMPLATES: Ability to create reminder templates that are made up of multiple appointment reminders scheduled for pre-determined time intervals (e.g. 1 month, 1 week, and 1 day before a scheduled appointment).
  3. ENHANCED INBOX: Select whether to display and/or hide New, Read, and Replied incoming messages. The new inbox also features a foldering system whereby users can create inbox folders and file messages in those folders.
  4. MESSAGE ERROR NOTIFICATION: No more guessing whether or not a message has reached the recipient. The new iTRS will now display a red error icon when an outbound message has been rejected or failed.
  5. MANUAL OPT-IN: Users of iTRS can now search existing contacts and manually opt them into a mobile campaign. This is great when adding contacts to retention-based alerts.
  • REPORTS: A new mobile summary report has been added to the REPORTS section and it provides a wealth of new data for effective campaign analysis:
  1. Sent/Received timeline graph displays a graph of messages for a set date range and keyword
  2. Contacts Overview gives a count of incoming mobile numbers, opt-outs, average messages per user, and carrier lookups
  3. Message Overview provides a breakdown of the different types of messages received by the system (e.g. keywords, help, stop, replies)
  4. Sent Message Overview combines the delivery reports into one summary that shows delivered, rejected, and failed messages. Not all carriers provide delivery reports so there is also an N/A category for reports that are not available
  5. Rejected/Failed Summary displays a summary of the reasons why messages were rejected by the carrier.

Patron Text to Vote

Text the Screen

Being a huge Lakers fan, during the last couple of home games I noticed Fox Sports West running a live Text to Vote campaign on the 59925 iVision Mobile short code! The campaign is sponsored by Patron asking viewers to text in to vote on certain questions. This is not a real-time Text to Screen, but still cool to see our short code being used during a live Lakers telecast.
